Resources for team IMC

Background

It's so funny. I have been taking online classes for a few years now. This marketing class has been one of the more challenging because it is an online class where you have to work on a group project in which we have to create and implement an IMC, or Integrated Marketing Campaign. The project is 1/4 of your final grade so the team effort is extremely important. It has been challenging in that there are only two of us working on our project but luckily we are both determined to work together and produce an IMC that can, in reality, be implemented by my partner's business.

That being said, I love the online discussion board where we have to submit our take on that week's reading from the textbook or the other readings provided to us by our instructor. I honestly learn the most from the other student's posts. With online classes I believe the instructor is there to facilitate learning in a clear and concise manner and to guide discussion and to encourage us to personalize what we are learning.

 Personal Interest

One of the question's that we had to answer for this week is, "what resources were the most personal interest to you?" I would have to say that my fellow students were the most personal interest to me. I enjoyed watching everyone's YouTube videos because we were all fairly uncomfortable with speaking in to a camera and we were all experiencing the same fears and doubts about whether we sounded ok, looked ok, posted our videos ok, etc. We were all in the same boat and we got through it!

Most Useful Resources

  •  Our client: This happens to be my teammate Andrew. He has a real business that he and his wife are trying to make profitable while also spreading the word for the cause in which he supports.
  • Our textbook: While the reading is a bit dry and not exactly a riveting read it is extremely informative and I will probably use the book for years to come. For those not in our class this is the textbook that we are using this semester. This is an amazing resource with tons of practical application to it. I've definitely learned more technical terms and more about strategy and planning, communicating, and market positioning much, much more!
  • The internet: A never ending supply of useful information can be found here. One of the best untapped resources is our very own Colorado Mountain College online library. There you can find scholarly and peer reviewed journals, articles and eBooks.
  • My husband: I am biases but I think he's just brilliant. He has an amazing way of looking at things that I never would have thought of. He is also a owner/partner in a multimedia marketing firm.

Music & Advertising

Welcome to my blog for Marketing 446: Advertising and Promotions! For the past few weeks we have been posting videos on YouTube (check out my posts here. Please overlook the ridiculous thumbnail pictures. Could they be more unflattering?!)

This week our assignment is to talk about music in advertising. We all know how much music helps us to remember a certain time or place in our lives. The same goes for commercials. When you put the two together you create an unforgettable ad campaign!

One of the most memorable advertising campaigns from my childhood (I realize I am showing my age here) was the Pepsi campaign where they used Michael Jackson as the spokesperson and integrated his music from his hit song "Billie Jean" and adapted it to singing about Pepsi. When I heard this ad and saw the commercial I thought it was the greatest thing since sliced bread! When I saw a kid who was around my age, Alfonso Ribeiro, I thought he was the luckiest kid alive.

Since I was a kid who was raised by a single mother, who also happened to be a health nut, there was NO sodas allowed in my house. After I saw the commercial I'm sure I begged and begged for a Pepsi because that's what the "cool kids" were drinking. I can't remember off hand but I'm pretty sure my mom did not buy me a Pepsi, but I'm pretty sure I saved up my allowance for one!

See the video below:

Music in this particular commercial was extremely effective in delivering it's message. It talked about Pepsi...for a New Generation. I believed that I was of that New Generation and it stuck with me for a long, long time. Pepsi has continued with a variation of this campaign for years now by using singers/musicians like Britney Spears, Beyonce, Faith Hill, Kanye West, Shakira, Ludacris, Tina Turner and many, many more.

If you look at the diagram above you will see the different aspects of using music in advertising. This Pepsi video had it all for me:

  • It captured my attention
  • It promoted a positive mood
  • It definitely increased receptivity of message
